Whooping Cough

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause severe complications, especially in infants. The cough is often persistent and where a ‘whoop’ sound can be heard after taking a deep breath between coughs.

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect against whooping cough, typically provided as a combination vaccine that also covers diphtheria and tetanus.

Who Should Get Vaccinated

  • Infants and Children: Routine vaccinations at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months, and at 4 years.
  • Adolescents: Booster dose at 12-13 years.
  • Pregnant Women: Ideally between 20-32 weeks.
  • Adults in Close Contact with Infants: Including healthcare workers and childcare providers.

The whooping cough vaccine is available under the National Immunisation Program for eligible groups (where an administration fee applies).
