Strengthening your Immune System During Winter

As winter sports training continues and Olympic fever kicks off, we are all excited to see all the teams on the court, giving their best and enjoying the games. However, the colder months also bring an increased risk of cold and flu viruses, which can impact our children’s performance and overall well-being. We’ll share some essential tips on how to avoid these viruses and how to build a strong immune system.

Although studies on the intricacies of the immune system response are continuing, there is still evidence that found healthy lifestyle and can help your immune function.

Building a Strong Immune System

1. Balanced Diet:
Ensure your child’s diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Foods high in vitamins C and D, as well as zinc, are particularly beneficial for immune health.

2. Regular Physical Activity:
Encourage your children to stay active. Regular exercise helps boost the immune system and can be incorporated through their rugby practices and games.

3. Adequate Sleep:
Children need plenty of sleep to maintain a strong immune system. Ensure they get the recommended 9-11 hours of sleep per night.

4. Hydration:
Keep your children hydrated. Water is essential for maintaining overall health and aiding the immune system in fighting off infections. If your child does not drink enough water, find some hacks here.

5. Stress Management:
Help your children manage stress through relaxation techniques, hobbies, and ensuring they have downtime to unwind from school and sports activities.

6. Vaccinations:
Make sure your children are up-to-date with their vaccinations, including the annual flu shot. Vaccinations are a key part of preventing illness and protecting the health of the community. Most scheduled and travel vaccinations can be provided by a pharmacist. Bookings can be made here.

7. Testing for RSV and other viruses:
Along with COVID testing, there are now tests that can detect RSV & FLU. By having these tests available for use at home, you will help reduce the spread to other family members especially to the vulnerable and get the right treatment and management.

If you have issues with getting medications due to stock shortages eg. azithromycin antibiotics, our pharmacist can assist by:

  • Contacting your doctor for an alternative
  • Giving an estimated time when the medications may arrive
  • Providing instructions on different methods on how to best take your medications if there is another dosage form available eg. If the tablet is suitable for crushing and mixing (as some medications do not allow for this)
  • Recommending other supportive treatment for the relief of symptoms

It’s essential to strengthen your immune system from the wave of seasonal viruses this winter and upcoming ‘hayfever’ season. Visit your pharmacist or our team today for tailored advice, vaccinations, probiotics and supplements to keep your immune system strong!
